Our Invitation

After many thousands of generations, life on Earth and our species in particular has arrived at such a tremendous crossroads.

The dynamics of human arrogance and supremacy continue to exact a terrible toll, and at the same time we’re more capable than ever of collective historical honesty and gaining traction over the forces of tyranny. How we raise today’s children, an already demanding and unpredictable undertaking in the best of times, has everything to do with our ability to fully inhabit the gravitas of the larger historical moment.

In this 90-min teaching and guided practice, we’ll explore parenting as a kind of slow-motion activism capable of nurturing profound, long-term systemic change. We’ll consider parenting strategies that instill Earth-honoring, decolonial values and tips for teaching age-appropriate cultural and spiritual life-skills.

You’ll hear from Maryam Javaid about her work with black & brown Muslim mums on conscious parenting, healing and breaking cycles, and how to prevent repeating the parenting patterns you might have experienced as a child.

And from Mia Cooley, founder of xHood, you’ll hear about pioneering work to support queer parents and families, the tenets of reproductive justice, and how to include aunties, big sisters, cousins, and matriarchs of the community in raising kids for the world ahead.

This offering is for anyone spending dedicated time with young ones or hoping to step into that capacity more in the future, and all are welcome. We’re aiming to inspire and uplift more than proclaim hopefully already obvious global and systemic challenges.

This event also serves as a kind of introduction to our new, upcoming course, Raising Radical Kids. This four-session short course, guided by Dr. Daniel Foor, affirms that raising kind, clever, and culturally courageous children is one of the most subversive and impactful ways to support long-term systemic change. In the course, we’ll learn ways to parent that include the Earth and ancestors, explore personal blocks to teaching kids about ritual and the unseen, consider age-appropriate treatment of systemic and interpersonal violence, and learn ways to honor soul-needs that differ from your own. Course begins on May 6.

Parenting amidst rapid, unpredictable global change is a full-being practice that calls for patience, faith, and long-term vision.
