About this event
Is it reasonable to expect leaders in the fields of psychology and spirituality to take a public stand on matters of social justice and work for systemic change? What’s the responsibility of the spiritual teacher or popular psychologist with respect to ongoing colonialism, racism, sexism, and extractive economic systems? Is it even possible to specialize in healing and caring for the psyche and soul without proactive, outspoken care for the state of the world?
These are the questions we’ll pose in this free, public, 90 minute talk with Daniel Foor, founder and director at Ancestral Medicine, and author of the book by the same name.
We hope you’ll come away from this teaching with a deeper understanding of what sort of leader you might like to be; when, if ever, it may be appropriate to alienate some groups in the name of truth or justice; and how to choose which teachers to trust based on how they tie their work and life to the matters of our times.

More about the event
Daniel will share briefly about his own process, as a public figure and business owner, of gradually becoming more outspoken on matters of culture and systemic justice. Together we’ll wonder about the deafening silence from so many thought leaders, especially of European ancestries, in spiritual and psychological circles on topics like the genocides in Palestine and Sudan, rising fascism in many Western nations, and the ecological catastrophe of global capitalism. We’ll also explore strategies to try to usefully shift the balance in institutions and systems that are currently averse to proactive work for cultural change.
Hard truths may be expressed in this talk, and names may be named, but the approach will be constructive and solution-oriented, not righteous. We’re not down with cancel culture at Ancestral Medicine. Our time will allow for discussion and a bit of guided practice to make sure we’re listening to greater sources of guidance. There is no cost to join, and Ancestral Medicine is committed to keeping our solidarity tangible through regular donations to relief efforts and mutual aid in both Palestine and Sudan.
