Yes, I’m aware the title of the talk is provocative. And yet we human folk have been crossing the boundaries of our blood ancestral tribal group to get involved with people and traditions from other ancestries for a very long time. I would like to go out on a limb to suggest that such cultural exchange is not categorically problematic.
And yet the tangled history (and ongoing reality) of racism, colonialism, and religious extremism makes just diving into religious training with another people’s ancestors potentially problematic. So how to know what’s cool and what’s not? Nobody sets out to be *that person* and yet blindspots are by definition not conscious.
So…we’ll talk about cultural appropriation (as convoluted as that conversation can become) and how to approach with deep respect and awareness if you happen to be one of those humans drawn to search outside your specific blood ancestry for training or perhaps even a sense of belonging in these tricky and beautifully diverse times.
